It is with deep reverence and solemn remembrance that we celebrate the life of Althon Amo Smith, who departed this world on June 27, 2026, in Medina, Tennessee, at the age of 88. Born on July 21, 1937, in the heart of Henderson County, Tennessee, Amo’s journey was one woven of enduring love, resilience, and the steadfast bonds of family and friendship.
A man anchored by his roots, Amo Smith was the beloved son of the late Orvis Otis Smith and Dovie Eveline Barnes Smith. Throughout his life, Amo reflected the quiet dignity and integrity instilled in him from an early age. His story is one marked by devotion, both to those he cherished and to the values that defined him.
Amo’s legacy flourishes most brightly through his loving family. He is survived by his sons, Greg Smith (Melinda) and Mark Smith (Cathy), and his devoted daughter, Lisa Bailey (Robert). In addition to his children, the memory of Amo endures in the hearts of their spouses—Melinda, Cathy, and Robert—each touched, in their unique way, by the depth of his kindness and the warmth of his companionship. Generations continue to be uplifted by his presence; grandchildren and great-grandchildren carry forward the family’s enduring spirit, while a circle of friends and extended loved ones recall treasured moments spent in his company.
Mr. Amo was a devoted Christian and loved Jesus. He retired from Milan Express after many years of service.
He follows into eternity his dearly missed wife of nearly 38 years, Shirley J. Smith, whose memory he held close. Amo also reunites with his siblings who preceded him in death: his brothers, James Edward Smith, Joe E. Smith, and Orvie D. Smith; and his sisters, Mattie Clark, Alice Avo Barnes, and Sue Zugbaum. Their collective influence shaped the man he became and the lasting impression he left upon all fortunate enough to have known him.
We pause to honor Althon Amo Smith, whose life stands as a testament to loyalty, fortitude, and familial love. Those who survive him will forever cherish his memory—a memory that glows warmly through the lessons he imparted, the love he so generously gave, and the quiet, uplifting strength he brought to every gathering. In grief and gratitude, we remember a life truly well-lived.
May he rest in peace, embraced by the love and light of those who went before, and honored eternally in the hearts of all who remain.
